Howl’s moving castle - Feeling Overwelmed

This scene follows a little accident when Sophie rearranges Howl’s bathroom and Howl’s hair is accidentally dyed orange instead of his preferred platinum blond. Overwhelmed by the stress of this incident Howl’s exhaustion catches up with him as he explains to Sophie that ‘life isn’t worth living if you can’t be beautiful’. Sophie explains to him that she’s never felt beautiful in her whole life. This leads Howl to share his other troubles about how the Witch of the West is trying to hunt him down and find his castle and how he’s been using his magic to cover his personal insecurities. He goes on to tell Sophie that he once pursued the Witch of the West because her appearance was beautiful, but rather was an unattractive person. Adding to matters, Howl is also avoiding being recruited by the King to join the war that’s been raging with a neighboring country. Having no desire to fight in the war, but being too scared to tell the King face to face, he decides to ask Sophie (whose magically aged as an old lady) to pose as his mother and to tell the King that he is too sick to fight in the war.

This is one of my favorite Ghibli’s favorite animations. Every time i can watch this movie i can feel something different and I really love all the beautiful scenes, with all the beautiful colors. I also like the story plot, characters and the change in Howl when you first see him and how he is towards the end of the movie. I feel it’s quite different.

In Korea, life is really busy and from a young age we focus much of our attention and energy on studying, working hard, becoming wealthy and looking beautiful. It is often so much pressure that people can feel depressed and very overwhelmed when thinking about their future. Often we idolize beauty and wealth, leading to a feeling of being chronically lacking when measured against celebrity idols. Throw in a few bad days, an over demanding boss, some bad relationship dramas, and potentially some housing issues and we can feel totally overwhelmed, stress out and even to the point of having a meltdown, much like Howl is feeling in this scene. 

There are several rich themes in this scene that lend fittingly towards various situations as a @ddasuhan_. Firstly if you have a friend or partner who is suffering from any of these life demanding pressures, giving this @ddasuhan_ to them can tell them you are there to listen to their problems and to help and encourage them in anyway you can. 

It can also tell someone important to you that looks are always fading and in the end never really the most important thing, but rather it’s who they are that’s true beauty. So even if your friend or hopefully future friend or love interest is very beautiful they should really know that it’s their true self that you really value and that’s what makes a true relationship in the end. Likewise, if this person whose important to you thinks money,  fame or social status is really important, that those things can often make your life less enjoyable and become a burden if they may attract the wrong attention from the wrong people. In the end having a real true friend or lover who likes you for you, even when you don’t look so good or on a bad day, or when you are a complete mess is the real treasure in life.
